We sometimes overlook some of the great non-fiction books we have in the Library. S2 students have been borrowing our recipe and baking books and creating wonderful treats. I was fortunate to share some of their masterpieces, including fantastic scones and fabulous bread. Yum!

Book Recommendation - Amy & Lan
Senior Reading Group - Amy & Lan by Sadie Jones
It took me a few chapters to settle in but once I got to know Amy and Lan and their families, the book became far more enjoyable. The story is set on a farm settled by families seeking a simpler life. It is told through the eyes of seven-year-old friends, Amy and Lan. There are some wonderful descriptions - I loved reading about life on the farm, through all the seasons. However, real life intrudes as the children grow older; money worries, school and other 'outsiders', mental health issues, and betrayal. The losses were also devastating, and I defy anyone not to need a tissue when reading about the kittens and Angel Rocket. I would recommend this to our senior students (S4+)

Empathy Day, 8th June 2023
Today is Empathy Day. What is empathy?
Empathy is our ability to understand and experience someone else’s feelings. It builds stronger, kinder communities. It’s a crucial life skill that young people need in order to learn, thrive and contribute. We’re not born with a fixed quantity of empathy – it’s a skill we can all learn. Excitingly, research shows that books are a powerful tool to develop it. When young people identify with book characters, they learn to see things from others’ points of view. As they read, they are building their empathy skills.” Empathy Lab
We have been talking about empathy this week in the Library; you can read more here:

Holocaust Memorial Day 2023
The theme for this year's Holocaust Memorial Day is 'Ordinary People'.
We have been working closely with West Lothian Museum Services to create a display about Tom Fleming, an ordinary person from Armadale, who was involved in the liberation of Stalag XB, and kept a diary of his experiences.
S6 students, Iseabail and Natalie, talked movingly about Tom and the horrors of Stalag XB at the West Lothian Holocaust Memorial Event at Howden Park Centre this morning.
S1 and S2 pupils have been learning about the holocaust during their library lessons, and about survivors of the holocaust in history.
Come and see our display of books and learn more about Tom's life, and see extracts from his diary.
